WHY GALLOWAY?

Good Hair Coat =

Lower Winter Feed Costs

Research at Montana State University has shown that beef cows with a hair coat just one inch thicker than average requires 20% to 25% less  digestible feed intake to maintain body weight in cold weather.  The double hair coat found on    Galloway’s means less feed required to maintain good body condition.

Advantages of the double hair coat are:

the heavy dense under coat breaks the wind and the longer outer coat sheds moisture, rain and snow, keeping the undercoat dry, hence not losing its insulation value.

The Galloway’s thick winter hair coat enables their calves to endure variations in temperature, strong wind and driving rain—conditions that put calves of other breeds in the sick pen.  Their hair coat also provides insect  resistance, and many contend it enables the breed to maintain low levels of back fat.  In warm weather, Galloways shed their winter coats easily and their hair becomes slick and shiny.

Superior Foraging Ability

Studies conducted by Mois Laboratory of Denmark have demonstrated that of all breeds tested, the Galloways  consume more varieties of flora than any of the other breeds on test.   This ability to digest the less desirable species of flora means Galloways will thrive in less than ideal conditions.

Calving Ease

Cattlemen are attracted to Galloways because they calve easily and rebreed quickly with birth weights averaging from 65 to 85 pounds.  Research done at the University of Nebraska Meat Research  Center, found that Galloways had the highest weaning percentage, highest calf survival percentage, outstandingly low incidence of calving difficulties (0.8%), and cows are known to produce up to 20 years of age.

Meat Quality

The Galloway is one of only a handful beef breeds in use today that was developed specifically for beef production, not dairy or draft.  Historians noted the Galloways “tender and juicy” beef in the year 1530.

That tradition of beef production has enabled the breed to capture some of the most competitive carcass competitions in North America.  Galloway carcasses are moderate in weight, yet percent yield and percent retail product exceed their heavier counterparts of other breeds.  Their     carcasses are well marbled  with large ribeyes.

Naturally Polled

Galloways are one of only two  cattle breeds that are naturally polled.

Hybrid Vigor

Galloways are completely unrelated to the other popular breeds in the industry.  For this reason they offer significant levels of hybrid vigor in a crossbreeding program.  This reduces the incidence of disease and the need for growth hormone implants.  As more beef producers move toward natural or organically fed beef, Galloways are worthy of serious consideration.

Meat for the Health Conscious

Over the past 25 years, beef has become much leaner and healthier.  Consumers of Galloway meat have long known where to find the best source of exceptionally lean beef - Galloway beef.

It has been well documented by Health and Welfare Canada that it is the saturated fat in our diet that raises low density lipoprotien (IDL) cholesterol in human blood.  It is the LDL in our blood that is responsible for heart attacks and strokes.

1994 fact content analysis of Galloway meat in the Natinal Sciences Department of the University of Guelph (Ontario) revealed a most healthy composition, the total fat content of Galloway meat was shown to be exceptionally low, in the range of 2% and in particular the harmful saturated fat content was very low, in the range of 1%.

Diets for human consumption must contain certain essential fatty acids, namely linoleic acids (omega6) and linolenic (omega3).  These fatty acids, also called plyunsaturated fats, are essential for human cells and can not be manufactured by the human body.

However, linoleic (omega6) fatty acid in excessive amounts can produce certain cancers.  It has been recommended that the omega6:omega3 ratio in foods be lower than 10:1.  In this regard, Galloway meat is exceptionally healthy having omega6:omega3 ratios of about 3:1.

These findings reveal that Galloway meat is as good as chicken or fish in a healthy diet.  A healthy diet should contain a certain amount of lean meat.  Lean beef is a good source of dietary protein.  In this regard nothing could be better than Galloway meat.
